In congressional testimony, Gottlieb, who died in 1999, acknowledged that the agency had administered LSD to many unwitting subjects, including prison inmates and patrons of brothels set up and run by the CIA. At least one participant died when he jumped out of a 10th-floor window in a hotel; others claimed to have suffered serious psychological damage."
CIA expert John Greenewald claims to have discovered the shocking truth behind the agency’s illicit MK Ultra mind control experiment. Using the Freedom of Information act, he believes he has discovered how the US intelligence services experimented on both humans and animals using drugs and hypnosis for the top secret project.

But last year, Mr Greenewald got his hands on 30,000 files, available here. - purely because “they were filed accidentally as financial records”, the expert said.
He claims one document revealed how the CIA planned to drug “criminals awaiting trial held in a prison hospital ward” in a bid to develop “improved techniques in drug interrogation”

Another document details the CIA’s interest in developing ways to cause amnesia in humans using experiments “no matter how weird, inconclusive or unusual”, the expert added.
The Black Vault curator says despite his findings, which he published in 2018, there are still swathes of information still missing or redacted in the records.
Mr Greenewald told Express.co.uk: “The CIA were trying to figure out how they could control the human mind primarily with LSD and hypnosis.
“They were trying to control the human mind and master it.”
The report goes on to detail how they were looking to find ways of developing hypnotic speaking techniques which would control the minds of “large audiences” and “heighten group susceptibility”.

Experiments which were “too dangerous, too shocking, too unusual for routine testing would be of interest to us,” the memo from 1956 details.
Mr Greenewald has been fighting since 1999 to get the CIA to hand over the documents and says they “completely rewrite the history” of the controversial project.

In 1975, the Washington Post revealed that a federally commissioned investigation into the situation found that “a civilian employee of the Department of the Army unwittingly took LSD as part of a Central Intelligence Agency test.” During a joint hearing on MK-ULTRA conducted in 1977, Senator Edward Kennedy acknowledged that “At least one death, that of Doctor Olson, resulted from these activities.”
One of the most shocking revelations reveals the secretive US agency even experimented on its own scientists.
He said: “So in the 1950s, they decided to do an experiment that brought together some of their own CIA scientists, to what they thought was a retreat centre.”
They dropped LSD into the after dinner drinks of the scientists to see if they could extract information from their own scientists.
But the experiment went wrong, because one of the scientists didn’t drink, so he didn’t take the glass of Cointreau.
However, the experiment derailed even further when one of the scientists, Dr Frank Olson, had an adverse reaction to the LSD.
In the days that followed, he exhibited very paranoid and schizophrenic qualities about him after this experiment by the CIA.
In the middle of the night, the scientist allegedly took his own life.
The US government first described his death as a suicide, and then as misadventure, while others allege murder - with his family claiming the CIA is behind a major conspiracy.
This tragedy led to Congress becoming aware of the MK Ultra program leading to the formation of the Church Committee.
Although the CIA admitted to running the covert operation during congressional hearings in the 1970s, they claimed all records relating to it had been destroyed.
Mr Greenewald’s battle for information started in 1999, when he requested the only documents relating to MK Ultra that the CIA said had not been destroyed - 30,000 pages of financial records.
The CIA finally provided John with the 30,000 pages in 2004 - which they claimed were a full and complete set of records related to the project.
Mr Greenewald believes the MK Ultra program represents a nadir for the notorious government agency.
He said: “I would say it’s a black mark eye on the CIA’s history.

Operation Mockingbird
"Operation Mockingbird was (IS) a domestic propaganda campaign aimed at promoting the views of the CIA within the media. Reporters shared their notebooks with the CIA. Editors shared their staff. Some of the journalists were Pulitzer Prize winners, distinguished reporters who considered themselves ambassadors without portfolio for their country."
Operation Mockingbird was a CIA program that made a mockery of free press in the US. The existence of this program which spread CIA propaganda through the media was flatly denied until it was uncovered in Senate hearings in the mid-1970s. The CIA's claims that it shut the program down in 1976 are undoubtedly a further deception.
"About a third of the whole CIA budget went to media propaganda operations... We're talking about hundreds of millions of dollars a year just for that... close to a billion dollars are being spent every year by the United States on secret propaganda." – Testimony of William Schaap to Congress252
"The CIA currently maintains a network of several hundred foreign individuals around the world who provide intelligence for the CIA and at times attempt to influence opinion through the use of covert propaganda. These individuals provide the CIA with direct access to a large number of newspapers and periodicals, scores of press services and news agencies, radio and television stations, commercial book publishers, and other foreign media outlets."
The CIA went as far as to write scripts for Hollywood. One interesting example is the funding of the movie version of Animal Farm in 1954, a book written just less than a decade earlier by George Orwell which enjoyed large commercial success. The problem for the CIA was that Orwell was a socialist, and his book attacked both capitalism and communism. To avoid this conflict, the CIA changed the ending of the Hollywood version to portray capitalism in a more positive light.
Some investigative journalists have claimed that Operation Mockingbird did not end in 1976 as the CIA claims. For example, in 1998, researcher Steve Kangas claimed that conservative billionaire Richard Mellon Scaife, who ran 'Forum World Features', a foreign news organization, was a CIA asset and used the organization to disseminate propaganda for circulation in the United States.
Kangas ended up dead with a bullet hole in his head, in the office of Richard Scaife. It was ruled a suicide, although there were discrepancies in the police report and the autopsy.
Robert S Allen and Paul Scott were wiretapped during these dark times, Allen unfortunately found the same fate as Kangas.
